David Bobb: A Leader in Civic Education and Engagement
David Bobb is a nationally recognized leader in civic education with over 25 years of experience at the intersection of education reform and civic engagement. Since 2013, he has served as president of the Bill of Rights Institute, expanding its reach to over 75,000 teachers and 7.5 million students nationwide. Under his leadership, the Institute has become the nation’s leading provider of free, open educational resources for civics and history classrooms.
David has worked for two decades to advance civic education that engages both the hearts and minds of students. He played a key role in developing the Educating for American Democracy Roadmap, a cross-ideological initiative designed to strengthen civics and history education in K-12 classrooms. He also serves on advisory boards for national civic initiatives, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s National Civics Bee.
Before joining the Bill of Rights Institute, David was the founding director of Hillsdale College’s Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Citizenship and Constitutional Studies in Washington, D.C., where he developed a national civic education program for high school teachers. He also designed online educational programs used by over half a million participants. In addition to his work in education policy, he has taught courses in American politics and public policy at Boston College and Hillsdale College.
An author and scholar, David wrote Humility: An Unlikely Biography of America’s Greatest Virtue (HarperCollins, 2013) and contributed to a 2019 Oxford University Press volume on Frederick Douglass. His writing has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, and other publications. Currently, he is working on a book about the future of civics.
David earned his Ph.D. in political science from Boston College, where he received fellowships from the Pew, Earhart, and Bradley Foundations.
